Chalk Tally is a food log you talk to, made by QWIRQ LLC. This page says what it keeps about you, why, who helps run it, and how to take it with you or delete it.

What Chalk Tally keeps

  • Your account: your email address, the name you give, and either a password (kept only as a one-way scramble that can’t be read back) or the ID of the Google account you sign in with.
  • What you log: foods, meals, amounts and times; photos you add; what you type or say to Chalk Tally, kept as text; your goals, weigh-ins and measurements; and, only if you give them, your birth year and sex for the calorie estimate.
  • From apps you connect, only if you connect them: steps, active calories, weigh-ins and workouts from Google Health (Health Connect) or Fitbit.
  • To keep your account safe: which devices and browsers are signed in (their type and the internet address they connect from), and a record of changes to your account.

Voice recordings aren’t kept. What you say is turned into text, and the recording is let go.

How it’s used

Only to run Chalk Tally for you: to log what you ate, work out the numbers, show your days and trends, send the notifications you turn on, and keep your account secure. Chalk Tally has no ads. Your information is never sold, and never shared for advertising.

Who helps run it

  • Hosting: Contabo (the servers and photo storage) and Supabase (the database).
  • AI: Anthropic reads what you type or say, and your food photos, to log them. OpenAI turns speech into text and runs live voice. Both are used through their business services, which don’t train their models on what’s sent to them by default.
  • Food facts: food names, never who you are, are looked up in public food databases (USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts) and on restaurants’ own websites.
  • Phone notifications: sent through Expo’s notification service.

Each gets only what its job needs.

Signing in with Google

If you sign in with Google, Chalk Tally receives your name, email address and Google account ID from Google, and uses them only to sign you in and fill in your name. It can’t see your Gmail, contacts, files or anything else in your Google account. Chalk Tally’s use of information received from Google follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Your choices

  • Take it with you: Settings, then Privacy, then Download your data.
  • Delete your account: Settings, then Privacy. For 30 days you can sign in and restore it; after that everything is deleted for good, photos and downloads included.
  • Disconnect Google Health or Fitbit at any time in Settings, then Connected apps, and choose whether to keep what came in from them.

Children

Chalk Tally isn’t meant for children under 13.
